Counselling FAQs
How does counselling work?
Counselling is a safe and confidential space where we work together to explore your concerns, emotions, and goals. Through our sessions, we’ll identify patterns, coping strategies, and ways to help you feel more in control of your well-being.
How long will I need counselling?
The duration of therapy varies depending on your needs. Some clients benefit from short-term counselling (a few sessions), while others prefer long-term support. We’ll regularly review your progress and decide together what works best for you.
What happens in a typical session?
Each session lasts around 60 minutes, and we’ll discuss whatever feels most important to you. I may ask questions, offer reflections, and suggest exercises to help explore your thoughts and feelings. Some sessions may involve practical coping techniques, while others may focus on deeper emotional work.
Will everything I say be kept private?
Yes, confidentiality is a key part of counselling. However, there are exceptions: if you are at risk of harming to yourself or others, or if there are legal safeguarding concerns (such as abuse or criminal activity), I may need to share information with appropriate authorities. We will always discuss this first if possible.
What if I don’t know what to talk about?
That’s completely okay. Some clients come with a clear issue, while others just feel "stuck" or overwhelmed. I can help guide the conversation by asking gentle questions, exploring your emotions, and helping you understand what’s beneath your feelings.
What approaches or techniques do you use?
I use a combination of therapeutic techniques tailored to your needs. This may include person-centred therapy (where we focus on your experiences and emotions), or/and Psychotherapy, mindfulness techniques, or hypnotherapy if appropriate.
What if I feel uncomfortable during a session?
Feeling uncomfortable sometimes happens, especially when discussing difficult emotions. You are always in control of what you share. If something feels too much, we can slow down or take breaks. My role is to ensure you feel safe and supported.
How will I know if therapy is working?
You might notice changes in your thoughts, emotions, or behaviours. Some improvements are subtle—such as feeling lighter or managing stress better—while others may be more noticeable. We’ll regularly check in to see how you’re feeling and adjust our approach if needed.
Can I stop therapy if I feel better?
Absolutely. You are in control of your therapy journey. If you feel you’ve gained what you needed, we can discuss ending sessions or transitioning to a check-in approach. I also encourage a final session to reflect on progress and discuss future self-care.
Do you offer online or flexible sessions?
Yes, I offer in-person & online. I aim to provide flexibility where possible to fit around your schedule.
